A Book for Our Times

I am reading If My People, A Prayer Guide for Our Nation by Jack Countryman. This is a small hardcover book containing a 40 day prayer journey for our nation. Being that this is an election year in the United States I found this to be especially meaningful.

There is a devotion for each day that includes a short prayer, two different Bible passages and a short reflection. Sandwiched in-between these devotions are various articles and speech excerpts from former leaders of our country. Abraham Lincoln, Ronald Reagan, Franklin Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower to name a few.

The devotion pages are decorated with a blue tinted picture of our flag with two monuments overplayed on it. Throughout the book are pictures of our country’s symbols along with pictures of some of our country’s leaders. The artwork is subtle, yet meaningful and doesn’t distract from the text. I am enjoying reading the devotion for each day.

It has got me really thinking about how much our country needs prayers right now. As I finish this book I have someone in mind that I want to pass it on to. I am hoping that person will pass it on when she finishes it also. This would make a really fine inspirational gift. post signature

I have received a copy of this book free to review. All opinions are my own.

How to Best Apply Foundation

Here’s a tip that I wasn’t aware of: if you want liquid foundation to remain usable throughout its lifetime, always shake it well before application.

Then the trick is to pick the right foundation color. For a natural look your foundation should match your skin tone. Test foundations along your jawline. Blend the foundation into your skin to see if the color is right. If it's too light, then test the next shade darker. If it's too dark, then go down a shade until the color matches. You will know the best color because it will disappear into your skin. The goal of foundation application is not to change the tone /color of your skin. I will often ask for a sample to take home so I can see what it looks like in different lighting then the store lighting.

For flawless application start with a clean, moisturized face. A clean face will allow the makeup to smooth and blend easier. Apply moisturizer and let it soak in at least 3 minutes before applying foundation. (Dry skin will soak up the foundation if not given that base.)

Apply foundation by dabbing a small amount on your face. Start by applying the foundation in little dots on your forehead, down your nose and on your chin and cheeks. Blend the foundation with a brush, sponge or your fingertips. Blend it off on the jaw line and hair line. Make sure it's blended completely to create a natural, flawless look. Using your fingertips will give the heaviest application, a sponge a thinner application. Be careful in the area around your eyes where the skin is super thin. Don't forget to apply foundation on your eyelids and lips. (I’ve never done that!)

To avoid a foundation line around the jaw apply foundation as usual then use a little moisturizer in your hand and blend it down your neck. On the under-eye area, apply makeup with a finger or with a small synthetic brush or applicator. Pat with your fingertips to blend, using your ring finger or pinkie to minimize the pressure.

To finish, and for retouching during the day, use loose or pressed powder that is light-textured and contains no oil. Setting foundation with a powder is a must for oily skin; however, if your skin is dry or if you use solid foundation, your foundation will stay in place without powder.

Liquid foundation should never be applied over your makeup for retouching purposes, because it is impossible to blend well on top of powder, dust, or sebum.

The smoother your skin, the more natural the foundation will look. So do exfoliate twice a week to get rid of dead skin.

Time for a Facial Steam

Beauty isn’t just skin deep—it reflects your inner health. To help keep your skin radiant, get plenty of rest, exercise and eat a balanced diet.

If you still need a little help-- steaming is an excellent way to moisturize skin. It helps clean your skin and leaves your face looking youthful. Steaming doesn’t remove dirt and grime but it will help unclog pores.

To give yourself a “facial sauna”, start by adding some dried herbs to a pan or bowl of steaming water. (I like to use lavender, rose petals and chamomile or calendula petals.) Set the pan/bowl where you can comfortably sit next to it. Lay a towel over the back of your head, put your face over the steam and secure the ends of the towel around the pan/bowl to capture all of the steam creating a mini sauna. Keep your eyes closed so the steam won’t irritate them. (Keep your face about 12” from the steam.)

Enjoy the steam for a minute or so, remove your head, take a few breaths of fresh air. Go back under the towel and repeat a few times. We recommend that you do not steam for longer than 5-10 minutes. The water can be saved and used to rinse your face after the water has cooled.

Normal skin can steam once or twice a week.
Dry skin can steam once every week or two for no longer than 5 minutes.
Oily skin can steam once or twice a week.
Problem skin can steam once or twice a week.

Steam also revives tired skin, removes toxins and improves circulation. Though primarily used as a skin care technique, the facial steam is equally beneficial in relieving stress and cold symptoms. (For a cold, different herbs or essential oils would be used.)

I've Got The Blues

I'm a little late getting the blue photos up but here they are...

It was a fun project. It made me really be aware of what was around me. I think I'll do it again sometime with different colors.  Red was my favorite.
